She was
running from shop to shop, searching for anything to feed her hungry daughter,
with that one rupee coin in her tightened grip so as not to lose it, as it was
the only money she had.
But, what
can you buy with one rupee in this world, nothing. She could have begged for
more money, but didn't because of her self-respect. She wouldn't take grants
for the same reason.
She used to
live a happy life once, when her husband was alive. But her husband eventually
lost all of his fortune, committed suicide leaving his family on the roads. She
used to have so many friends when she was rich, but now when she actually
needed them, no one was there. Some of them whom she met in the market, even
refused to identify her. "How amazing this world is!" she had
thought.

Most of the
shopkeepers knew her now, as it had been some time since she started living in
that neighborhood. But, she wouldn't ask them for help, neither were they interested
in offering the same. It was a poor neighborhood, how many people would they
help even if they wanted to.
"Hey
lady, are you looking for this?” shouted a voice as she was about to enter a
shop. The voice came from a very small shop built within someone's home. An old
lady was looking right at her, with a jar full of those 25p candies in her hands.
A smile appeared on the woman's face & she dashed to that small shop,
exchanged her money for 4 of those candies & dashed back home.
She had purchased the most precious thing in this world for just one rupee, her daughter's smile. :)
